Dementias Service

Dementia is a loss of cognitive function that occurs with certain conditions. It affects memory, thinking, and behaviour. These effects on the body are frequently small to start with, but for someone with dementia they can come severe enough to affect day-to-day life. The symptoms that someone with dementia experiences will greatly depend on two primary factors; the parts of the brain that are affected, and the condition that's causing the dementia.

The changes in the brain do due to loss of cells and the breakdown of important nerve connections. It's a progressive complaint severe enough to intrude with life every day and help and decelerate down daily conditioning. Progressive complaint means that the symptoms will get worse over time as brain cells come more injured and gradationally die. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia.

Some of the symptoms of dementia include memory loss, difficulty completing tasks, reduced intellection, communication problems, mood changes, absentminded of family/ friends, and loss of coordination.

A person with dementia may need monitoring and help at home or in an institution. Possible options include

  • Adult day care
  • Boarding homes
